What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in water instead of soil. Nutrients are added to the water, allowing plants to continuously feed. Hydroponic gardening happens inside a greenhouse, allowing produce to be grown year round. Growing food indoors also decreases the exposure to bugs and diseases, greatly reducing the need for pesticides.

Is hydroponic produce organic?

The United States only allows produce grown in soil to be officially labeled organic. In spite of hydroponic gardens rarely needing pesticides, produce can only be called organic if grown in the dirt.

What are the advantages of hydroponics?

Hydroponic gardening uses about 1/20th the amount of water of traditional gardening. In addition, there is no fertilizer runoff into the surrounding environment. Because plants are grown indoors, pesticides are usually not needed.

Does hydroponic produce taste different?

In blind taste tests, hydroponically grown produce performs just as well as soil-grown, and in many studies, the hydroponic produce beat out its competitors. Freshness and ripeness are big contributors to taste. Many tomatoes bought from grocery stores are often disappointing in taste because they are picked green, then sprayed with Ethylene, a ripening agent that turns them red. They are then shipped great distances to the stores.
